A look at Maidan Wardak Province

Maidan Wardag is one of the six central provinces of Afghanistan. It is situated at west of Capital Kabul and Parwan, to the north-west of Logar and to the east of Ghazni and Bamyan provinces.

Presently its capital is Maidan Shar, "means Ground with city" which lays about 35 kilometers to the west of Kabul.

During the reign of King Zaher Shah in 1336 lunar  (1957 A.D) Maidan Wardag became a province. Before being a province it was a district of Logar and some districts of the province were belonging to Ghazni province.

At first it was called only Wardag “Persian pronunciation, Wardak” and its first ever capital was Kot-e-Ashro. But in the reign of Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan (1973-1978) the capital shifted to (Maidan Shar) consequently it became the second capital of the province.

When Mujahideen (Islamic religious fighters) beat Soviets and the communist regime broke down in Afghanistan. The local commanders of Maidan Shar took control of the provincial capital (1992). They added “Maidan, which means ground and desert in Pashto/Dari Languages” to Wardag and started calling the province, Maidan Wardag instead of only Wardag.

But still, some Wardags (Wardag People) do not accept Maidan Wardag as a province name. They prefer to call it only Wardag or Wardag-Maidan. Also plenty of foreigners use Wardak as a province name in their official documents.

WARDAG AS A CLAN NAME

Originally Wardag is the name of a famous Pashtun clan. The person, who belongs to the clan, is called Wardag and also the region where Wardags dwell is named Wardag as well. In English when we speak of Wardag people we had better use the plural form (Wardags).

Certain Wardags believe that, they are relations of Zadrann and Mangal, who are main Pashtun tribes related to Karlanni Pashtuns. Zadrann and, Mangal also think, they are blood-related to each other. This claim can be proved by studying dialects and folklore of Wardag, Mangal and Zadrann clans comparatively.

However, some other Wardags and historians claim, Wardags are “Sayeds” descendents of (Sayed Gaiso Daraz), who was a religious saint, descended from (Hazrat Bibi Fatima, only living daughter of Hazrat Muhammad. The descendants of Hazrat Bibi Fatima are called (Sayeds) and they are supposed more respectful among Muslims.
